Cody Mcfadyen was born in Texas in 1968. He designed websites before selling his first novel, Shadow Man, in 2005. He has since had a second book – The Face of Death – published. Both were international best sellers. He lives in Southern California with his two black labs, often referred to as ‘The Black Forces of Destruction.’ He drinks coffee (copiously), plays guitar (badly), and reads (voraciously). He abhors adverbs in writing, except when used in short bios like this one. Read More

Back From The Dead

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated...

I have to apologize for such a long and unworthy absence. I do have a good excuse, though: I was buried in wrapping up the revisions of Book 4 - 'Abandoned'. It's all copyedit now, which means that puppy will be out on the shelves in the UK and the US this fall.

In addition, I'm getting ready to move at the end of June to Colorado, and after 26 years in California, there are some serious logistics involved.

AND - I was wrapping up the first 100 pages of my next book...

That's the end of the excuses, promise. In order to make up for it, I hereby promise to do a post a week from now until my move (June 22nd or thereabouts). Once the move is happening, all bets are off until I'm settled again with the basics: Computer, internet, Direct TV, coffee.

So - see ya'll next week - promise!

Good luck with the move Cody!

Glad to see you're moving to Colorado... hope it's not a big city, although the biggest city here, pales in comparison to where you've lived.
If you need advice on where to eat, or anything Colorado oriented.. just give me a shout, I'd be glad to help.

I almost finished reading the darker side, which I picked up from Library. While I found book gripping, I did not find the book more realistic, stories with respect to having 100+ victims, moving and catching victim almost every other day etc. did not really made it feel like fantasy. I think the problem with the book is it is trying to become a series and hence Cody is trying to just put more without thinking that a good novel should have amazing plot and tightly knit stories. I am kind of disappointed, with respect to not making it realistic.

John and Brian,

Thanks for the kind words. I'm now in Colorado and in the middle of unpacking hell... to answer your question, Brian, I'm in the Thornton/Westminster area, so near the big city but not in it.

'Dosnab' - not sure from your post what you considered 'unrealistic'. 100+ victims is certainly not the highest body count for a serial killer in reality. Google 'Pedro
Alonso Lopez'. Reputed to have killed over 300 people. There is also Gilles De Rais, HH Holmes, and several others that exceed the 100+ victim mark. The serial killer in 'The Darker Side' was prolific, but certainly not a record-breaker.

As a note - I never mind someone saying they don't like one of my books. Really. I'd have to have an ego the size of Texas to think every reader would walk away satisfied. But when you say things like 'without thinking that a good novel should have amazing plot and tightly knit stories', well... now you're just being rude.

Also - the book is not 'trying to become a series.' It's already a series, and The Darker Side is the third novel in it.

Enough of that... I don't generally bother responding to this kind of post... I guess all the moving has made me cranky! :)

Hi Cody,

having read what Dosnab said and your reply, let me assure you:

your books are top of the list!

Apart from the first two Dexter books no other thrillers are getting close to any of the Smoky Barrett stories.

I'm really looking forward to meet her again! And hope, her virtual fate doesn't treat her too badly... Please have mercy with her and all her fans :)

Very best regards from Munich, Germany -

Yours, Martin

Dear Cody, dear readers of this Blog,

I am from Berlin, Germany, so english it not my mother language.

My Mum and me, we are great fans of your Smoky Barrett books.
My lucky Mum has not read the newest one, "abandoned", yet, because she had to wait for the german translation. I "swallowed" the english version months ago, because I could not wait.

Now, I am looking forward to the fifth one with happy anticipation.

From my point of view, the best think about the Smoky Barrett books is the following:

In spite of all the very horrible things that happen to the characters - especially to Smoky - they are still so full of love for their family and friends. Full of love, hope and love for their lifes. Still, they feel absolutely true and authentic to me. Smoky feels like a close friend (with a much more dangerous and exciting life, though) to me.

Thanks for writing and for all the work, passion and heart you've obviously put into it.

best wishes from Berlin,
Yvonne and her mother Renate
